Air America Goes Silent in Northeast Ohio

Wed Apr 04, 2007 at 06:27:31 PM PDT

Imagine my shock today when I turned on AM 1350 Radio Free Ohio to listen to Ed Schultz and I heard nothing but sports commentary from some guy claiming that AM 1350 was now the sports authority...

As reported here many times before, another Air America station bites the dust:  http://www.1350radiofreeohio.com/

More on the flip....

It was a weak station based out of Akron... Cleveland, the county seat of the most Democratic county in Ohio, apparently wasn't good enough to get its own station, so we had to contort our antennas and listen out of Akron.  I was grateful that we could get anything at all.  Sometimes it was hard to tune in from Cleveland, but I guess the signal wasn't weak enough for its Cleveland ClearChannel competitors.  They decided to crush it out of existence.  It was the sole voice of reason in an AM band full of nothing but wingnuts.  We already had at least four other 24 hour sports radio stations, but I guess we needed just one more...  After all, the Cleveland Indians AA minor league team needed a flagship station...  Heaven forbid that a station compete with "all conservative all the time" AM 1220 and its various clones across the dial.  WTAM 1100 is Cleveland's 50,000 watt superstation.  They get Rush Limbaugh, of course...

So, that's it... the monopolization of this market is complete...  you now have two whole choices on the AM band... sports or wingnuttery...  When is someone going to step up to the plate and offer talk radio for the majority of Americans?

I got a flurry of emails Thursday saying it was going off the air and becoming yet another duplicative, useless sports talk station (Lose, Buckeyes! Lose, Browns! Lose, Indians! Los! Lose! Lose! I hate sports!) early the next morning, and sure enough, it did. It's weird to driv e to work in silence. I'm going to have to bring some CDs back out to my car. Sure, it's still online, but I generally only listen to radio in my car.

Frankly, this is, as you suggest, an insult. I don't know where you are, but the station was extremely get-able on the Northeast side of Cleveland and downtown, where I am. And I loved it.  There has got to be some station in the city with a dying format that is willing to put on leftie talkers that will actually appeal to the bulk of this area's listeners. Funny how the Laura Ingrahams and Michael Medveds, whose bigoted, jingoistic radio shows I just saw an ad for a little while ago can always find an outlet for their trash-talk.

...for several months at this point.  There two stations (one closer to Boston, one out in the MetroWest suburbs, both very weak signals) are now playing Spanish music.

Air America is pretty much dead.  I don't think it's an indictment on liberal talk radio, per se, but rather on a station that really seemed like it couldn't get anything right from a financial standpoint.  Plus, I think radio hosts have to kind of organically gain an audience...which some of their hosts did of course...but others were kind of foisted on stations nationwide when perhaps they were not the very best choices out there.

To be honest, I listen to NPR anyway when I'm listening to talk radio (well, and sports during baseball season).  Although I wish liberal talk radio was more available to both balance the other kind of talk radio content, but obviously also for people who would really eat it up, I don't personally care that much for partisan talk radio of any sort.  I'm not sure why.  I kind of liked Franken, but most people seemed to consider him rather boring, so I'm probably "out of the mainstream" as far as radio goes, anyway.

It still exists in DC, but it is on the weaker WWRC AM 1260 here. WMAL AM 630 is much stronger. WWRC fades out in places like Reston, where WMAL is still strong. I agree that Air America is probably dead, but it was a good start. Hopefully some other effort will develop a lessons learned report and not repeat the same mistakes again.

      •  I Sort Of Consider It Like... (0+ / 0-)

...the false start where some valuable lessons are learned and some good things came out of it.  People forget it took rightwing talk awhile to get itself as truly established as it is today.  Sure, pseudo-populist kind-of-conservative talk's been around forever, but the kind of really partisan stuff took awhile to become so entrenched.

Of course, I could be totally wrong and Air America itself will survive and strengthen enough to find it's way back into the markets it's currently losing.  I just happen to doubt it at this point.

In all honest many right-wing media publications have lost--and continue to lose--money. The Washington Times has rarely been profitable. Fox News lost a lot of money in its early years. Limbaugh wasn't profitable either for the first few years. A lot of the early conservative talk shows lost money. What seemed to have made talk radio powerful was Clinton.

Air America could come out of it or another competetitor might emerge. I don't know. While I sometimes am pessisimistic, I also realize that the right didn't dominate talk radio overnight. It probably took several failed hosts and attempts before they finally because succesful. It will be the same with progressive/liberal talk radio.

He is very smart, well read and non confrontational. He broadcasts out of Oregon.  Ed Schultz is on the Jones Network, and frankly I don't know what that means because he is on the 'quake' radio station that starts with Stephanie Miller at 6 am , then Thom, then at noon Ed Schultz, and at 3 pm. I liked it because they didn't have to pretend to always give a "balanced" report when it was not warranted.  They would call something outrageous and despicable if it was outrageous and dispicable.  Like Foley and the attempted Republican coverup, wingnut talk show hosts advocating spewing all manner of hatred and bile, ect. These things are not properly covered with a  "balanced", dispassionate presentation.

    •  I think that its "death" (0+ / 0-)

is being engineered by the corporate entities that own the bulk of the radio stations and point up exactly why we need to keep screaming to the FCC about media consolidation, which something like 99% of respondents oppose. Rush Limbaugh didn't go on the air and immediately soar to the top of the ratings and make buckets of money. I don't think even Howard Stern did that. If you are kept off the air because the owners of a majority of radio outlets in this country oppose your politics, you never build an audience. Sorry ,I'm still seething from hearing that ad on TV for the right-wing talkers a little while ago. And I'm tired of people blaming Air America for not performing total miracles out of the box.

  •  In Madison, Wis., a campaign saved Air America (8+ / 0-)

and Ed Schultz, etc., when the Clear Channel FM station was going to switch from progressive talk and go to all sports.
Thousands of people signed petitions, marched, held meetings, got publicity and most importantly, rounded up new advertisers to support progressive talk programs on that station.
Advertisers themselves participated in the campaign. Station reps were invited to meetings.  All very civilized but very fervent.
It worked! After several weeks, Clear Channel reversed itself.
Please note there were no threats of a boycott. Instead, new advertisers were sought and brought on board. Old advertisers stressed that they had gotten good results from the progressive format.
And the protesters vowed to give even more support to progressive talk's advertisers.
Ed Schultz is coming to the city April 12 to do his show here and express his thanks.

I don't think they are really pushing it, and they don't have too when they can just drop Big Eddie and throw in another sports show. After all, the sports show they added is probably one that is produced for 100 markets. When Clear Channel can produce one show for 100 different markets you don't have to sell much advertising to make it very profitable for the corporation.

    •  "Can't sell advertising" (0+ / 0-)

is a weak excuse when many of these companies with clusters of stations in a market are selling packages of advertising for a constellation of stations which they try to balance not to compete with each other. I suspect that when you get down to the lower rated stations for specialty audiences, there isn't that much difference in how much advertising they can sell and it's become as you say a decision based on how cheaply they can get programming. Clear Channel and its ilk are the blight on radio.
