LSMS: "Less sh*t, more sugar" (with poll!)

Sat Aug 02, 2008 at 07:33:32 PM PDT

Something my grandfather always said, which my father has carried down throughout his life - we've even turned it into a verb...Whenever we want something done, and done NOW we say "LSMS" which means "less shit, more sugar". To this day I still have no idea what fecal material has to do with sugar, but when I hear the call I move - and fast!

Local McCain Chair Says Lunch with Race-Baiter is "Personal Life"

John McCain came to Cincinnati this week to court the black vote at the national NAACP convention.  McCain has a miserable record with the NAACP, receiving multiple grades of "F" from the organization in prior years.  Meanwhile, the McCain campaign has just named Hamilton County prosecutor Joe Deters as its local chair, a move which has already caused Ohio Democratic State Chair Chris Redfern to issue a denunciation.

The Growing Power of the Fair Trade Uprising

This is an ongoing series from the national tour for THE UPRISING. You can order The Uprising at Amazon.com or through your local independent bookstore.

2581824136_fec1f79696_m.jpgLOUISVILLE, KY - I spent yesterday in Ohio's three biggest cities - Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati. With the Buckeye State among the hardest hit by lobbyist-written trade policies, it wasn't surprising that NAFTA was at the center of discussion at events for THE UPRISING in Ohio.

Over the last few years, polls show the public has moved to something of a consensus position on trade: full-on opposition to NAFTA-style pacts.

Waste Transfer Station in Cincinnati

Wed Mar 05, 2008 at 10:32:23 AM PDT

June 2007:
It is no surprise that government decisions can be bought and paid for. What has been a surprise to me is the Ohio EPA ordering Cincinnati's Board of Health to approve a license on behalf of Waste Management, despite an organized neighborhood outcry. Campaigns like this have worked in other states, it seems Ohio is as resistant to change as ever.

Truth, Lies, and Torture: Stories from Iraq

Sun Feb 17, 2008 at 12:25:06 PM PDT

Filmed by Justin Jeffre at a January, 2008 event at the University of Cincinnati, this film features two speakers on the topic of what's really happening in Iraq: Fedaa Jaism, an Iraqi-American student, and Aiden Delgado, a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW).

Fired up in the Queen City! YOU CAN HELP!

Thu Feb 14, 2008 at 08:13:48 AM PDT

Recently, the Obama campaign arrived in Ohio and staffers set up shop for the upcoming primary.  Last night was the first organizational meeting for campaign volunteers and I have to say, I have a GREAT feeling about this race.  The level of excitement and enthusiasm was incredible.  Never have I seen so many people fired up about an election in this part of the state and even long time activists in the area said this was unprecedented.  Literally HUNDREDS of volunteers showed up on only 24 hours notice to show their willingness to lend a hand.

Thank Ann Coulter!

Wed Aug 29, 2007 at 05:03:19 PM PDT

On Sept. 6th, Ann Coulter will be speaking at my university, Xavier University in Cincinnati. The campus republicans spent over $20,000 to pay Coulter's speaking fees, money that could've been spent on a myriad of positive causes. A large group of people on campus and in the Cincinnati area are completely outraged.

Those opposed to Coulter's hate-mongering created a program called Thank Ann Coulter. Essentially what we are doing is taking the controversy Coulter has brought to the area and are using it for a postive purpose, to raise money and awareness for Xavier's progressive student groups.

Thanks to the work of Equality Ohio we have created a site where one can donate.

Lame Ducks Hunted in Ohio, CCV Assails Hotel Porn, “Impeach Bush” Sign Littering

Fri Aug 10, 2007 at 01:15:00 PM PDT

ePluribusMedia OhioNews Bureau

House Assistant Democratic Leader Todd Book (D-McDermott) and Minority Whip Steve Driehaus (D-Price Hill) introduced a joint resolution Friday in Columbus to amend the Ohio Constitution to end "lame duck" legislative sessions.

The resolution will forbid a legislative session following a Presidential or Gubernatorial election, unless a special session is called by the Governor or General Assembly.  Their joint resolution closely follows a controversial ruling by the Ohio Supreme Court, which overturned Governor Strickland’s veto of a "lame duck" bill, the so-called "lead paint bill," that caps non-economic damages in consumer protection cases and gives new protections to lead paint makers.

In Ohio: Shrinking Cities, Job Losses Continue

Thu Jun 28, 2007 at 08:52:09 AM PDT

The old one-two punch of population and job loss hit Ohio in its midsection again, as news broke Thursday that Ohio’s big cities are among those with the highest population loss, and that job losses, coming this time from Delphi, will shutter a Columbus latch-maker plant by the end of the year.

Creationist Museum – Charging Admission To The Rapture

Sun Apr 15, 2007 at 08:55:51 AM PDT

I was driving from Cincinnati and heading to Columbus to attend a meeting on technology and new products. As always I kill the time by listening to the hatred on the right wing radio outlets telling us all that Bush is protecting us while the church loonies are dancing around themselves yelling hip hip hurray the end is almost here. I used to listen to Air America but it's all but gone from the Ohio airwaves...NPR is good but you have to get a bit closer to Columbus to receive it at all...So the right wing-nut shit keeps me awake and I must add yelling back at my car radio how Hannity is an asshole...but he ain't the problem on this day...oh no...

Give me a few more minutes after the jump; Please.!!

In Ohio: Bennett’s Beating Sets Stage For Brunner’s One-Ring Circus Hearing Next Week

Wed Apr 04, 2007 at 06:09:36 PM PDT

One hearing down, one hearing to go. With the defeat Wednesday in Columbus by a judge who denied a temporary restraining order sought by GOP Kingpin Bob Bennett to gain more time to delay his day of death from further meddling in overseeing elections by the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections (CCBOE), his date with destiny in Euclid City Hall next week, where he'll make his case as to why he should not be fired from his election post by the Ohio’s new election chief, is now fixed.

If Battlin Bob’s high-priced ($195/hr) Cincinnati trial attorney Stan Chesley can’t do any better on the North Coast than Chesley's fellow law firm Attorney Christopher D. Stock did today in Central Ohio, Battlin Bob will not only suffer the ignominy of being fired twice by Jennifer Brunner, Ohio’s new Democratic Secretary of State, but will leave the scene with a bucket of shame slopped over himself as partial payment for the scandalous way he allowed the state’s most populous county to conduct elections.

Time to Re-Read G.W. Speech that Launched the War

Thu Nov 30, 2006 at 10:30:35 AM PDT

In early October, 2002, George W. Bush  gave the speech which launched the    war against Iraq. Take the time to re-read his words. Revisit the proof  of the enormity of the lie. Three thousand needless American deaths later, tens of thousands maimed for life, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis sent to their graves, hundreds of billions spent on a needless war, and for what, Mr. Bush?

Mean Jean Cries FOUL! Your chuckle of the day

Thu Oct 26, 2006 at 08:04:12 AM PDT

Middle-American Disconnect

Sat Sep 30, 2006 at 06:02:39 AM PDT

The Cincinnati Enquirer features a "Your Voice" guest opinion column.  The Enquirer is not known for its left-leaning tendencies, and neither is the region it covers.  But this editorial seems to me to illustrate the very real disconnect with what's going on in the halls of power and what goes on in the I-75 corridor.

OH-1: Dem John Cranley Surges, Leads Chabot By 9

Wed Aug 16, 2006 at 08:45:57 PM PDT

In the not too recent past, I did a rundown of House and Senate races in the Midwest. One race I touched on briefly was the Ohio 1st, where Cincinnati Councilman John Cranley was challenging incumbent Republican Rep. Steve Chabot.

I said back then that I thought that Cranley was doing no worse than running even with incumbent Republican Steve Chabot in Ohio's 1st District, which encompasses Cincinnati and its Western suburbs. I was wrong. According to Roll Call a recent poll has Cranley surging ahead of Chabot by nine points.

The Ohio 1st is vastly more Democratic than the Ohio 2nd which Paul Hackett almost won last year. Whereas the 2nd was 60%+ GOP, Ohio's 1st is basically a 50-50 tossup and was held by Dems in the early '90s.

Paul Hackett joins with Stephanie Studebaker to Rally for America

Wed Jul 19, 2006 at 03:48:06 PM PDT

Today I would like to invite you to join me and my friend Paul Hackett for a very special "RALLY FOR AMERICA" on Saturday, July 29th in Dayton, Ohio.

Three years ago President George Bush rushed our country to war in Iraq while Congressman Mike Turner cheered him on. Instead of pursuing Osama Bin Laden, the man responsible for the heinous events of 9/11, our President sent our troops back to Baghdad to pursue a war without end.

We have seen the effects of this war clearly here at home. As of today, the war in Iraq has consumed 2,554 brave American patriots. Of the entire nation, only four states have lost more sons and daughters to this war than Ohio.

Culture of Corruption - Illegal Illegals

Thu Jun 08, 2006 at 08:21:53 AM PDT

Corrupt and Hypocritical

A major Republican campaign contributor's company is up on charges of hiring illegal immigrants!

After hearing the NPR story about a raid on a homebuilder in Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati that was hiring illegal immigrants I decided to look into this story a little closer. Turns out that the owner of the homebuilder and his wife are major donors to Republicans all across the country.
